A group of young University of Tasmania and Australian Maritime College students have pulled together to strike a balance between surfing and studying and have started a student club with a difference.

“L.U.S.T started in February this year, to help students from all around Australia and the world, who have come here to study, to get away from the books and experience the stunning wilderness and awesome surf Tasmania has to offer.” Said Andy Hartley, President of L.U.S.T.

“With a club like this, it easy to find someone to go surfing with, cut down on petrol costs and if you want, talk about a difficult assignment” Said Andy Hartley, President of L.U.S.T

The Launceston University Surf Team will be holding three multi-facet surf competitions in the next few months to make sure students are getting enough “down-time”.

“We are catering for all water enthusiast who are studying at the University of Tasmania and Australian Maritime College, wether you ride a short board, body board or a long board there is a division for you.” said Hamish Wilkinson, L.U.S.T event organiser.

The first surfing competition held at Tam O Shanter Bay in recent history, The Chocolate Barrels Challenge will be held either on a Saturday or a Sunday between the 17th of May - 8th of June.

“The Northern coastline of Tasmania offers great waves for surfers, but the conditions need to be right for good waves, hence the reason why we have a four week swell window.” Said Andy Hartley, President of L.U.S.T.

On the day of the competition L.U.S.T will be working with The Surfrider Foundation Australia to do a beach clean up.

“Surfers are as guilty as anyone else when it comes to leaving rubbish on the beach, and this competition is a great opportunity for them for give something back to the local community. Its great to be able to get together and hold a surfing competition, but we need to be responsible for the condition of the surrounding environment.” Said Peter Whish-Wilson from The Surfrider Foundation Australia.
